MARCH NEWS FROM MRS.BRAND The month of March means preparing for Kansas Assessments, Spring Break, and hopefully warm weather. We have much to accomplish to prepare the fifth grade for their reading and math assessments. Please encourage your child to give their best effort and do neat work at all times. Your help and support is greatly appreciated. Mrs. Brand
RELIGION We will cover the role of Jesus as he began what is commonly referred to as his public life. We will review the events from the Baptism of Jesus to the Crucifixion of Jesus. Students will discover the ways that Jesus showed His divinity and lived as a human.
Math Fifth grade will review greatest common factor, least common multiple, and prime numbers. We will work on geometry which includes geometric shapes, lines, angles, and symmetry. Students will also compare and order fractions, put fractions into simplest form, and relate fractions to decimals.
English Fifth grade will study adjectives and adverbs. We will use adjectives in our writing assignments to add interest and give our stories more detail.
TESTING will be on March 24, 25, and 26 for math for Mrs. Brand’s homeroom. Reading is scheduled for April 6, 7, and 9th. Please try to ensure that your child has had a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast. Thank you, Mrs. Brand
Thank you for your support of the Spell-a-thon and Basket Bingo. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
What’s Happening in 5M?? Wow!! 2010!! It doesn’t seem possible! Happy New Year to you and your families!! Thank you all for your Christmas gifts and wishes. They mean so much! Your kindness is greatly appreciated!! Our third quarter will begin with a study of “The Building Blocks of Matter” in science. Your child will learn the states of matter, the physical properties of matter, and how matter reacts to chemicals. In addition, we will continue learning how to locate information in the chapter in order to answer questions. This is also a skill that we are practicing in social studies. You may have noticed past assignments in both science and social studies that consist of three questions. Often, we begin these together in class so that I can guide your student toward the correct information. My goal with these assignments is to increase critical thinking skills, and also to help the students write clear, concise answers to the questions. Students will be required to write the page number where they found the information. In reading, your fifth grader will need 14 AR points this quarter. I still have students who are not getting their AR points. These students will be asked to spend part of their recess reading their AR books. Again, I am asking that your child spend a minimum of 20 minutes, each evening reading. In social studies, we will begin our study of the American Revolution. Your fifth grader will prepare a report and poster/display of a major character from this era. Your child has been asked to use full, complete sentences with proper grammar and punctuation on assignments. I will request that work be rewritten if papers are not completed in this manner. As always, please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. I truly enjoy teaching your children.
Sincerely, Mrs. McKinney |
